Where a Lonely God Alights

J. Marshall Jenkins

Why was no one there when I came?
Why did no one answer when I called?
Is my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem?
Or have I no power to deliver? (Isaiah 50:2a)

Those who grasp for things smirk and ask,
“Where is God?”
Those who open their hands weep and ask,
“Where is God?”

Meanwhile, a lonely God stands
asking questions,
and no one hears
over the din of their own.

Those who grasp look to evade the police god
and miss the God who gives enough.
Those who weep look to find the superhero god
and miss the God who dies and rises.

Like a butterfly, God flutters away
from grasping hands
but alights on a still and open palm.
Watch. Wait. See the beauty.
