Until You Hear (poem)

Until You Hear
J. Marshall Jenkins

If your life ends today
before you think
it means anything,
another hundred years
will not add a word
unless, of course, you
change your mind
and trust it to mean
something,
you know not what.
And that is good
because now
you can ask your cat
what your life means
as it stretches for a scratch,
then move on to ask people
who interrupt your work,
children with their catastrophes,
clouds on their travels,
the moon with its moods,
then finally silence
rolling like thunder
until you hear
a still, small voice
ask what you want,
promise better,
and bid you,
“Go!”
